“Who and What Size Company Should Do It?”
You may be thinking my company is too small to be doing anything about Marketing or preparing a formal Sales plan. I am a sole owner and I have it all in my head what I want to do. I don’t have time to put anything formal together. We all know that medium and large companies spend a good bit of money on Marketing their business and most do a good deal of Sales planning but what does that mean and look like in those size companies?
For the Small business owner with only him or herself involved with the company to a company of 3 to 5 employees, the business owner must make time to develop a plan their desires in both Marketing and Sales. Thinking that you will get to each of those important pieces of running your business when it is floating around in your head is foolish. If you don’t know where to start or how to develop each, then go to someone who can take that project on but get it done either way. If you don’t have a clearly defined and written out Marketing plan you will no doubt miss something that you should have considered and I’ll bet the year will be half over and you just never got around to getting to it. When it comes to a Sales plan this involves many things and, oh by the way, it is your plan to generate revenue for your company so why wouldn’t you formalize some target revenue goals and how you will get there. Again, if you need help in developing a Sales plan, go out and get it.
I know there is never enough time in the day to get to all the things you must do. I am a small business owner and a company of one so I feel your pain. If you are leading or part of a medium to large size company, don’t assume that there is a complete plan in place. Even with people being paid and responsible for developing a Marketing or Sales plan, I have witnessed the lack of a plan or a plan that has been thoroughly developed. It is entirely too critical to the success of your business, no matter what size you are, to dismiss the importance of a well thought out and complete Marketing & Sales Plan.
